Soms zoek je niet de meest veelzijdige camera maar het instrument dat precies doet wat het moet doen. Ik zocht een toestel dat ik zonder nadenken in mijn tas kon gooien voor een verre reis maar dat ook onopvallend genoeg is voor rauwe straatfotografie. De Sony RX1R Mark III is voor mij de ultieme BTS camera tijdens hectische shoots en Profoto Roadshows. Hij is klein genoeg om altijd bij me te hebben maar tegelijkertijd simpel genoeg voor mijn gezinsleden om op de automatische stand prachtige beelden te maken.

Dit toestel is een technisch kanon vermomd als een onschuldige compactcamera. Zie de foto bovenaan de pagina om te zien hoe compact de camera is ten opzichte van een G master 24-70 lens. Het is de ideale camera voor snel werk: vlot opstarten en voorzien van een autofocus die zo scherp, snel en direct is dat je letterlijk nooit een moment mist. Zie ook de 2 foto's hieronder. De RX1 starte binnen 2 sec op, iso op auto gezet, macrostand geactiveerd, ik kon 3 foto's nemen en toen was de vlieg weg.

Karakter boven klinische specificaties

Als je reviews op YouTube bekijkt zie je vaak dat reviewers de camera vanuit een heel ander perspectief beoordelen. Ze vergelijken functies met de prijs en roepen al snel dat het te duur is voor wat je krijgt. Ook het feit dat het lensontwerp al jaren meegaat wordt vaak als minpunt bestempeld.

Maar daar gaat het bij deze camera niet om. Bij Leica worden lensdesigns van dertig jaar oud ook nog steeds geprezen om hun karakter en dat is bij deze Zeiss lens niet anders. Ja de motor in de lens is misschien een fractie trager dan de allernieuwste techniek maar de scherpstelling van de body zelf is met de AI tracking nog steeds beter dan tachtig procent van de camera’s op de markt. Het karakter van de lens is simpelweg prachtig. Voor creatieve platen vind ik het gebied tussen f 2 en f 4 erg sterk omdat het een unieke sfeer geeft. Vanaf f 4 komt de scherpte tussen het midden en de randen echt in balans waarbij f 5.6 voor mij voor deze lens de absolute sweetspot is.

Sony RX1R iii vs Leica Q3 vs Fuji GFX100RF

Natuurlijk heb ik naar de alternatieven gekeken. De Leica Q3 heeft in de basis dezelfde 60 megapixel sensor en is prachtig maar de vaste lens van 28mm is voor mij te wijd en de 43mm juist weer te krap voor op reis. Bovendien is de body groter en de autofocus een stuk trager. De Fujifilm GFX100RF middenformaat compact heeft ook een waanzinnige sensor maar de vaste f 4 lens viel voor mij direct af omdat ik meer lichtsterkte en diepte zocht en qua AF voelt het als een paar jaar terug in de tijd to.v. Sony. Dit zijn hele persoonlijke keuzes, met als motivatie: De Leica lens is scherper, heeft een bijzonder karakter, het is meer een premium brand, de camera is meer waarde vast, een hele sterke lijst aan voordelen. De scherpte van de Sony is ook heel goed, het karakter is anders, maar je schiet in RAW en kan zo je eigen karakter met beide camera's prima maken. Doorslaggevendwas voor mij het 'point & shoot' niveau. Binnen 2 sec is de camera operationeel en de AF mist bijna nooit.

De Sony RX1 won het voor mij ook op workflow. Omdat ik al een Sony A7R V gebruik heb ik met de RX1R III exact dezelfde sensor en dezelfde menu’s. De Sony A7CR zat met zijn verwisselbare lenzen weer te dicht tegen mijn andere camera’s aan. Ik zocht juist de focus en 'piece of mind' van een vaste lens.

Resolutie als zoom oplossing

Een groot voordeel van die 60 megapixels is dat je de vaste 35mm lens heel flexibel kunt gebruiken. Met één druk op de knop zoom je digitaal in naar 50mm of 70mm. In tegenstelling tot bij de Leica waar je een kader in je scherm krijgt zie je bij de Sony direct het ingezoomde beeld. Je kunt je compositie daar dus perfect op afstemmen. In de nabewerking krijg je overigens nog steeds de volledige 35mm RAW file binnen wat je alle vrijheid geeft. Hoewel je op 70mm natuurlijk een gecropte 35mm hebt kun je er dankzij de f 2 lichtsterkte nog steeds prachtige portretten met een mooie achtergrondonscherpte mee maken.

Doordat een interne beeldstabilisatie ontbreekt moet je wel iets anders werken. Je zult sneller op sluitertijden boven de 1/100 of bij veel beweging boven de 1/200 moeten zitten om bewegingsonscherpte te voorkomen. Dat is in de praktijk geen enkel probleem want de sensor presteert uitstekend bij hogere ISO waardes en het grote f 2 diafragma helpt je hier enorm bij. De snelheid is indrukwekkend; een eekhoorn die voorbij vliegt staat er door de feilloze autofocus haarscherp op. Ook de macro-stand is briljant: ik schoot een foto van een vlieg en de details die na een crop overbleven waren bizar, zie de foto's hierboven.

De Security hack

Die onopvallendheid is goud waard. De RX1R III ziet eruit als een 'simpel cameraatje' (hij voelt wel redelijk premium). Bij concerten of events waar je zonder toestemming niet binnenkomt met professionele apparatuur doet de beveiliging over dit ding totaal niet moeilijk. Maar ze moesten eens weten dat je de brute kracht van een 60MP sensor in je broekzak hebt. Naast dat je deze camera makkelijk mee naar binnen krijgt bij concerten en events, valt hij ook minder op als je regelmatig in minder veilige gebieden of situaties fotografeert.

Een gemiste MARKETING kans voor SONY

Naast alle technische voordelen heeft Sony zeker een paar steken laten vallen. De grootste beperkingen vind ik het ontbreken van weerbestendigheid en een kantelbaar scherm. De markt is van Sony gewend dat ze op basis van specificaties de beste zijn maar bij deze premium prijs hoort meer dan techniek alleen.

Met mijn achtergrond als marketeer zie ik hier een gemiste kans in het merkverhaal. Leica verkoopt geen camera maar een legende en een gevoel. Sony had hier de deuren van hun R&D afdeling wijd open moeten zetten. Geef die topdesigners een naam en gezicht, laat hun passie zien. Vertel het verhaal over hoe zij de opdracht kregen om s werelds beste compactcamera te bouwen zonder concessies. Als ze dat proces hadden gedeeld en die emotie hadden geladen dan was de prijs sneller geaccepteerd en hadden ze die weerbestendigheid en dat kantelbare scherm waarschijnlijk ook wel toegevoegd.

Conclusie

De Sony RX1R Mark III is een niche camera voor wie begrijpt dat minder soms meer is. Het is de kleinste full frame 60MP camera die er bestaat. Hij is niet perfect maar voor mij is het een compacte killer die je creatief uitdaagt zonder dat je een tas vol spullen hoeft mee te zeulen.

Ik zal deze review later nog een keer updaten met meer ervaringen en nieuwe foto's. Hieronder een aantal foto's die ik maakte tijdens een trip naar Mexico en rondom mijn dorp in Nederland. De foto's in deze blog over de Profoto Roadshow in Stockholm heb ik op 2 na ook gemaakt met de Sony RX1R III. Over video heb ik het nog niet gehad omdat ik hier nog niet veel mee gedaan heb.

1. Is de 35mm lens niet te beperkt voor op reis? 

Nee dankzij de 60 megapixel sensor kun je moeiteloos croppen naar 50mm of 70mm. Je behoudt dan nog steeds genoeg resolutie voor grote prints. Daarnaast kan je handmatig panorama's maken en die samenvoegen. Zie ook de voorbeelden op deze pagina.

2. Hoe presteert de camera zonder beeldstabilisatie? 

Het vraagt om een iets hogere sluitertijd zoals 1/200 om scherpte te garanderen. Omdat de camera erg goed presteert bij hoge ISO waardes en een F2 lens heeft is dit in de praktijk geen probleem.

3. Waarom zou ik deze kopen en niet de Leica Q3? 

De Sony is compacter en heeft een veel snellere autofocus met AI tracking. Bovendien is de 35mm brandpuntsafstand voor veel fotografen natuurlijker dan de 28mm van Leica.

4. Kun je met deze compactcamera ook professionele opdrachten doen? 

Absoluut de sensor is identiek aan de professionele Sony A7R V. De beeldkwaliteit en het dynamisch bereik zijn van het hoogste niveau.

5. Hoe is de accuduur van de RX1R III? 

Je kunt ongeveer 300 foto’s schieten op een volle accu. Voor een lange dag op pad is het verstandig om één of twee reservebatterijen mee te nemen.

6. Is de camera geschikt voor video? 

Ja de camera kan in hoge resolutie filmen en profiteert van Sony’s uitstekende autofocus maar hij is in de eerste plaats ontworpen voor fotografen.

7. Hoe werkt de macro stand op de Zeiss lens? 

Met een ring op de lens schakel je eenvoudig om naar de macro stand. Hiermee kun je van zeer dichtbij fotograferen met bizarre details.

8. Is de Sony RX1R Mark III weerbestendig? 

Nee dat is een van de weinige minpunten. Je moet dus voorzichtig zijn bij zware regenval of in stoffige omgevingen.

9. Wat is de sweetspot van de 35mm Zeiss lens? 

Hoewel f 2 prachtig is voor creatieve foto’s ligt de maximale scherpte over het hele beeld tussen de f 4 en f 5.6.

10. Kan ik de camera makkelijk meenemen naar concerten? 

Ja door het uiterlijk van een simpele compactcamera wordt hij bij de beveiliging zelden als professionele apparatuur gezien wat je veel vrijheid geeft.

60 Megapixels Full Frame in Your Pocket: My Experience with the Sony RX1R Mark III

Sometimes you aren't looking for the most versatile camera but the one that simply hits the mark. I was looking for a device I could toss into my bag for a long trip without a second thought yet discreet enough for raw street photography. The Sony RX1R Mark III is the ultimate BTS camera for me during hectic shoots and Profoto Roadshows. It is small enough to always have with me yet simple enough for my family to capture beautiful images on auto mode.

This device is a technical powerhouse disguised as an innocent compact camera. It is the ideal camera for fast work: quick startup and equipped with an autofocus so sharp and direct that you literally never miss a moment.

Character Over Clinical Specs

Many YouTube reviews judge this camera from a completely different perspective. They compare features to price and quickly claim it is too expensive for what you get. The fact that the lens design is years old is also frequently cited as a downside.

But that is not what this camera is about. At Leica lens designs from thirty years ago are still praised for their character and this Zeiss lens is no different. While the AF motor in the lens might be a fraction slower than the latest tech the camera’s AI tracking is still superior to eighty percent of everything on the market. The character of the lens is simply beautiful. For creative shots I find the range between f 2 and f 4 very strong as it provides a unique atmosphere. From f 4 onwards the sharpness between the center and edges really balances out with f 5.6 being my absolute sweet spot.

Why I Did Not Choose Leica or Fuji

Naturally I looked at the alternatives. The Leica Q3 uses the same 60 megapixel sensor and is stunning but the fixed 28mm lens is too wide for me and the 43mm is too tight for travel. Moreover the body is larger and the autofocus is significantly slower. The Fujifilm GFX100RF medium format compact also has an incredible sensor but the fixed f 4 lens was an immediate dealbreaker for me as I wanted more speed and depth.

Sony won on workflow. Since I already use a Sony A7R V the RX1R III gives me the exact same sensor and the same menus. The Sony A7CR with its interchangeable lenses felt too similar to my existing cameras. I was specifically looking for the focus of that fixed 35mm lens.

Resolution as a Zoom Solution

A major advantage of those 60 megapixels is the flexibility they bring to a fixed lens. With one touch you can digitally zoom to 50mm or 70mm. Unlike the Leica where you get a frame in your screen the Sony shows the zoomed image directly. You can tailor your composition perfectly. You still receive the full 35mm RAW file which gives you total freedom in post processing. While 70mm is technically a cropped 35mm the f 2 aperture still allows for beautiful portraits with lovely background blur.

Because internal image stabilization is missing you have to work slightly differently. You will need shutter speeds above 1/100 or above 1/200 for movement to avoid blur. In practice this is no problem at all because the sensor performs excellently at high ISO values and the large f 2 aperture helps you tremendously.

The Security Hack

That discretion is worth its weight in gold. The RX1R III looks like a simple compact camera. At concerts or events where you cannot enter with professional gear without permission security does not mind this thing at all. Little do they know you have the raw power of a 60MP sensor in your pocket.

A Marketing Missed Opportunity

Alongside all the technical advantages Sony certainly missed a few opportunities. I find the lack of weather sealing and a flip screen to be the biggest drawbacks. The market is used to Sony being best in class based on specs but this premium price point requires more than just tech.

With my background as a marketer I see a huge missed opportunity in the brand story. Leica does not just sell a camera but a legend and a feeling. Sony should have opened the doors to their R&D department. Give those top designers a face and show their passion. Tell the story of how they were tasked with building the world’s best compact camera without compromises. If they had shared that process and built that emotion the price would have been accepted immediately and they probably would have added that weather sealing and flip screen too.

Conclusion

The Sony RX1R Mark III is a niche device for those who understand that less is sometimes more. It is the smallest full frame 60MP setup in existence. It is not perfect but it is a compact killer that challenges you creatively without the need to lug around a bag full of gear.
